GRAFUG June 2011 Meeting Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us on June 11th for another great GRAFUG meeting. We had a good turnout. Let's keep it going!

Main Presentation

Bits & Bytes... Whatcha Got? and a little SWFox

ParallelFox by Jody L Meyer

Jody did a roughed in practice run of VFPx ParallelFox programming techniques that she has been investigating for her Southwest Fox Session. ParallelFox takes advantage of your computer's multiple core processors and hyperthreading. Joel Leach, the author of ParallelFox, designed it to be easy to understand and use.

Microsoft SQL Server Database Mail by Jody L Meyer

Jody discussed / reviewed the book "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - Implementation and Maintenance" Chapter 1: Lesson 4 - Database Mail. Here are some of the highlights:

Database Mail is primarily used for altering administrators of performance conditions or changes that have been made to objects. However, they also can include the results of queries. Database Mail uses the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) relay service that is available on all Windows machines to transmit mail messages.

Database Mail was added to SQL Server 2005 as a replacement for SQL Mail to:

Profiles form the core element within Database Mail. A given profile can contain multiple email accounts to provide a failover capability in the event a specific mail server is unavailable. Security can provide access to a mail profile to restrict the user's ability to send mail through a given profile. When a profile is created, it can be configured to be either a public or private profile.

Mail accounts define all the properties associated to a specific email account such as:

NOTE: If SQL Server Agent is not running... Message will accumulate in a queue within the msdb database.

Configuring Database Mail

Connect to an instance of SQL Server by using a query editor window and execute the following code:

sp_configure 'show advanced', 1;

Enable Database Mail:

sp_configure 'Database Mail XPs', 1;

Restore to default - Database Mail:

sp_configure 'show advanced', 0;

We also reviewed GoFish4 and Thor. You can find them both at VFPx.

Final Thoughts

A small but spirited group met for lunch afterwards at Sam's Joint Restaurant. It was great fun. What a nice way to bond and share war stories. It's time SUMMER BREAK! So enjoy! Relax! … and we will see you September 10, 2011.
