GRAFUG Meeting June 9, 2007

General Information

What a great ending to the GRAFUG season!  Thanks for coming out everyone.  I hope everyone has a great summer and will all come back in September.

Microsoft VFP 9.0 Service Pack 2 and Sedna beta has been released to download.

SW Fox will be held in October 18-21, 2007 in Arizona.  Early registration discount and free pre-con ends soon, so book now!!  Early bird special, $75 off, free PreCon, chance at a Whitelight scholarship and $25 for your user group.  Look at the registration form to see which preconference is scheduled for what time slot.  So if you really want to sign up for two you can, but only one is included for free.  Conference goes until Sunday at noon.

Are you going to miss us over the summer?  Don’t forget about the FoxShare mailing list. The FoxShare list is one of the longest established FoxPro related listservs available (non-FoxPro chatter is discouraged.)

If you have a job to post to the GRAFUG membership, please forward your request to me.

Main Presentation

This month we tried the Webinar format with Doug Hennig.   The ability to have such a great speaker without the expense of travel worked out extremely well!  If any of you would like Doug’s Whitepaper, please email me and I will send out a zip file to you.

The meat of the session was using (and deploying) FoxPro apps in Windows Vista.

One “nugget” from the meeting:  In the current Security set up for Windows XP, most users run as administrators because it’s too hard not to.  When installing applications, certain applications can’t launch without Administrator rights.  But if you ran as administrator, Malware was able to run on your computer too since it now had privileges to install.  Vista makes it easier to run as a standard user through user access control.  User access control before admin meant single security token with the admin privileges.  In vista there are split token assigns. Desktop token and normally you are running with the standard user token.  When a task with the admin tasks is used, then you are asked if you meant to run that program, then the admin token will prompt you if you meant to then you run it.  Look for the multicolored shield will prompt you.  (vista adds the shield to the icon)

Next Meeting

Our Next Meeting is September 8, 2007 from 10am-12pm.  The topic and speaker are to be determined.  I look forward to seeing all of you again.
